Something doesn’t add up?
Heres a fun philosophy excercise. As some of you may or may not know the classic "Ship of Theseus" replacement paradox scenario. Here is my version of it and how it may address identity issues.
Lets say, there is an island, lets call it the La isla HeadCase "HeadCase Island". So, in this island, there reigned a pretty demented King, we’ll call him King Case. So, under the rule of King Case, people were very happy in general. Every weekend, he gave away free alcohol to his loyal drunk subjects. Eventhough poverty stricken and starving, the peasants had a helluva time drinking and partying their asses off. So when King Case passed away peacefully in a drunken rage. The people missed him dearly and built a ship in his name. We’ll call it, the Ship of Case. The good people would take the ship out every year and drink themselves blind in memory of their beloved alco-king.
Over the years, the Ship of Case suffered wear and tear (you know how drunks are) and parts were replaced… plank by plank, sails, etc. All the used parts were dumped on a beach not to far off from where the Ship of Case was kept at the pier.
One fine day, some young kid comes along and finds all these ship parts on the beach (waste disposal isn’t exactly a priority to a nation of alcoholics). So this kid found that there were enough used parts to make a ship. So after weeks of hard work, he built a ship which looks exactly like the Ship of Case that is parked at the pier. So here it is, which is the Ship of Case?
The ship by the beach built by that kid with all the original parts? or the ship by the pier that had been completely replaced with new parts?
Think about this, and then think about how it applies to us.

brrr u look like my ex bf i hate u
have a nice day

This is a question of identity, so there can’t be two Ship of Cases. Like there can’t be two of me or you existing at the same time rite? so u gotta pick one.
Casey said this on August 5, 2006 at 6:55 am
Of course they’re not the same ship. I looked at the context as to what the whole concept of the Ship of Case is and I believe that the newer ship is the Ship of Case because of its purpose. The Ship of Case was made in honor of King Case and their drinking parties. Since the people who used to get drunk with the king used the newer ship, it is the Ship of Case as is bound by the purpose for which it was made. The older ship is not the Ship of Case since it was not made for the purpose which the concept Ship of Case entails.
JaY said this on August 5, 2006 at 7:22 am
It is not just the purpose of the ship. When you replace one part of the ship, the old part cease to become a part of Ship of Case, and the new one becomes a part of it. The part the kids collected -even though they make the whole ship- are not the parts of Ship of Case, they are the old parts. So the newer ship is the Ship of Case.
Burhan said this on August 5, 2006 at 8:47 am
I believe that the ship that was built by the kids was the ship of Case since it was made from the old parts of the ship of Case. The ship which old parts were replaced was the new one.

i will always prefer 2 b the 1 that i have changed into no matter what ppl say… i’m still me. whoever tried 2 b what i used 2 b will find that things might work in the begining but then they 2 will change those parts bit by bit 2 change those broken parts that can nvr b able 2 mend…

The ship by the pier is the Ship of Case.
When the old parts were discarded, they ceased to be part of the Ship of Case.
That they were reassembled to make another ship from discarded parts from a single ship doesn’t warrant any association to the ship that they originally formed.
Its a re-ship.
Jay said this on August 5, 2006 at 11:33 pm
A person can look at a ship and in his eyes beholds the purpose of the ship. The very soul of the ship will remain there irregardless of its clothing. More to say, this is debatable.
A similar idea to this point is if two bodies had their souls or brains transferred. (Freaky Friday or Vice Versa) Who will you consider is who? Would you identify with the body or with the soul in the body? What is the body’s identity without the soul? What value is a group of plastic, silicon and metal if not put together to serve its purpose? Purpose defines identity, not the material.

To reminisce about whats gone and try to salvage whatever’s deemed unwanted and useless by the other party… or is it a matter of moving on to the better things in life i.e. being optimistic, cos whats past is past…. Well, i am a memories-hoarder… and a pessimistic one too… i would go for the one the kids rebuilt with the discarded parts…

I think neither the old or the new ship replaced by new parts is the real ship.
The feelings of the new ship built by the people and the ship built of old parts aren’t the same as the one built in the honour of King Case.Old parts or new parts are not important, what it matters is the heart. What was the purpose of building the ship.
Evon said this on August 8, 2006 at 2:50 am
What’s in a name anyway! They can call it the Booze Boat for all I care and it still serves its purpose (to commemorate the king’s wild ways). Even form and substance don’t make a name. So, it’s not up to us folks. If the original builder still wants to call his old but new boat the Ship of Case, then so be it. At the same token, if the boy, foolishly, wants his new but old boat to be a namesake, who’s going to argue? You didn’t mention any legalities here ;-).

The first ship was built in memory of the late king case. That’s why the name ship of case. It has its own purpose. To celebrate, to remember the ‘goodness’ of king case. to remember how he had made his people happy. he may not be the best king but his people loved him. the second ship was built out of the used parts of the old ship of case. but i dont think this could be called the ’ship of case’ because its built for another purpose. i dont know what the boy was thinking. maybe he just wanted to have a ship of his own. where he got the used parts doesnt matter anymore.
its the faith that counts. not the money. not how many times we go to church. not how pretty the dress is. they may built a golden ship. who cares? what matters is what they beleive in.
lets drink to that!

It depends on the situation. If the ship is to be judged by its materials its definitely the ship built by he kids coz the parts used were originally from the King of Case. But if it is be classified for the purpose or its memorabilia, then its the ship built by the people of HeadCase Island, because though the ship will be replaced with new more parts, in their heart it will always be in memory of the King of Case

for every answer you procure from philosophy, you’re faced with more questions.
yet doesnt’ philosophy just hit that button on us? heh.
what i feel? things change, yet always remain the same. nothing’s totally new, and the old’s never too old. yet no matter how similar it seems, there’s always a difference.
of course, you can just look at it from a very simple point of view. changes happen. lol.

“The Ship of Case” is the one that the young kid has built from all the original parts. Because the ship was built by all the parts of the first ship built by the pier in memory of they beloved king. The true spirit of ‘The Ship of Case’ stays in that old things. It applies to us,as we fake our appearance or our attitude. The new person doesn’t have the same spirit inside him, but the ‘old things’ never really dissappear. It just hidden inside us with the real spirit of us. If the hidden old things inside us were put together, maybe someone can built a person that has our true spirit as well as the young kid built ‘The Original Ship of Case.’
Ps: I think all the answers can also be correct, you are free in interpreting something from your point of view. People opinions can’t be wrong, you can only agree or disagree. But, Casey…you are really something.

hi casey.i’ve really enjoy reading their reactions and reasoning. it’s how they see it that defines it. maybe, physical when we talk about the parts. the new ones replacing the old with the same name(reincarnation)or the old parts being built again(restored?),pycho, when we talk about the purpose, just when the people build it to serve as a remebrance and the kids build it as an object of their inspiration and the reality of their dreams.or maybe it speaks of the generation.people have different opinions about it and they have all the points to reason their stand.Nevertheless, I still go with the purpose thing…
thanks lad,it’s really good..two things just occur in my. there’s no harm restoring the old thing once you value the past and i salute the thought of making something out of a junk…

MELBA said this on August 11, 2006 at 10:21 pm
This is an interesting question but I believe it can be easily answered as soon as you clarify it. At the moment it’s ambiguous. (This is the problem with most philosophical questions.)
If you’re asking which is the Ship of Case in a physical sense - the ship that was built with the original materials - then the answer is the one the boy built. The materials are the same, the shape is the same, so it’s the same ship.
If you’re talking about the Ship of Case as an idea, then it’s the ship at the pier, i.e. the ship used to remember the king. In this sense it’s all in the purpose of the ship.
This problem raises an interesting question about humanity though - if a robot looks like a human, acts like one and displays every sign of human intelligence and emotion, does that make it human? What defines humanity? What are our “parts” that make us who we are, or different (if at all) from an extremely well-designed machine?
Anyway thanks for giving me a chance to ramble =)

Hi! well as for me… the two are both ship of case. We all have more than 1 identities, at least that’s what i believe. The old 1 is the personality that is forgotten through time but it is still there and only visible to those who are still getting to know you. just like the kid.The old ship is the identity that your old time friends just hav in their memries but the new 1 is the identity that we all grew up with corresponding changes brought by pressures in the society like the wears and tears.

The Ship of Case is of course the new one.
Say for example you were once a young innocent kid who knows nothing about the world. Then for years you were able to educate yourself and turned out to be the sophisticated person you are today.
Would you rather say your still the credulous person you are before instead of blowing your own horn as to what you have become today?
The newly built Ship of Case is merely the resurfacing of the past.

The Ship of Case is by the pier.
The boy had just built another ship using discarded parts that no longer serve as parts of The Ship of Case.
…………………….
X marks the spot where King Case’s people had built The Ship of Case (The Ship). Worn out parts were taken off The Ship, and discarded as worn out pieces, and not as The Ship.
Discarded parts of The Ship were replaced by good new parts. It wasn’t The Ship that was being replaced.

This reminds me. I link it to an article I read in the National Geographic, that inspires me to write up another blog. Thanks for the spark, Casey.

analogy of life…
no matter how much u change, u’r still u.
when we grow,we left part of ourselves that no longer serves a purpose to our development as a person. some people myt still want that part of you, that they have a hard time accepting. so they built an illusion of you in their mind and in their heart knowingly or unknowingly. yes, that part of you no longer exist but it doesn’t follow that you are no longer who u are anymore. u myt not looked like u wer before but truth is u are u no matter how much u changed, juz someone better! someone more wonderful!
so i would say, the real “Ship of Case” is the one which over the years have parts been replaced for the better.

I know all of you here are correct in your notions. For me, the idea of it is, about the leadership. On my own opinion a ship represents as a company or a country wherein ruled by the powerful people who patterned themselves from what the previous leaders used to be. While the new generation (kid) who can built by himself alone a new ship on putting all the old and new materials or stuff. Meaning the previous ship built by many people but the new one built by only a kid. On my point of view, the young one by his own effort, perseverance and magnificient approach can be able to manage and lead us into a better because of his profound knowledge in leadership. I may say our new generation can possibly do the same more than what we expected. Therefore, let us give our support to the new generation in order for us to have a brighter future.

in material, the kid’s ship is the original Ship of Case.
in essence however, the ship on the pier is really the Ship of Case.
it’s just like rennovating a house, you throw away the oldies but you live in the new house.
a point can be argued by conservatives, that the essence of the ship is in the material… but then, i think it is a spoiled belief. the essence of the ship is not in its materials but in its purpose and use and the “homage” that people gives it.

if we try to apply it to ourselves… its like changing clothes ehehe ^_^

Shorter Version ^_^
There was an island ruled by a kind king. He was so kind that every weekend they held fiestas even though theyre in crisis. Soon the king died. His people built a ship as a token of his kidness. Every year they commemorate the kindness of the king and set sail as a celebration. Years passed, the ship suffers several punishments so some parts are in need for replacement. Used parts are thrown at the rear of the island. Some kids find the dumped parts and decided to make a ship. Time passed, they built a ship exaclty as the maintained one.

Nice version…
The new ship is an exact reconstruction of the ship of case’s structure. In terms of image,It is the ship of case because of it’s resemblance. The older ship, the structurally replaced ship of case, can be called the ship of case because of it’s meaning or purpose.Which one is the ship of case?In my own understanding, The ship by the pier is the true ship of case because the name, ship of case,is given to that ship whose purpose is to honor the king.
Everyone of us changes in many ways, physically, mentally and we can say that all of our variations are us but our identity is solely depends on something definite and constant and is something unalterable like our birthmark, birthday, parents ,genes and many more.We can really fabricate or change them in our documents but that doesn’t change the reality.
So am I correct or am I just a novice and begginer when it comes to this philosophy stuff?Do i need some more thinking or improvements? If it doesn’t bother, can you tell what’s wrong with my reasoning.
By the way, the kid is extraordinary. WoOoW!!Boy!Is he that good?

This is a case in point of the philosophy of the human body and mind. The ship being the metaphor for the human person. In my opnion, the answer is neither because the original ship of case is not the one in the pier nor the one repaired by the people. Both can qualify to be called the ship of case but such a deduction would be imprecise.Like the ship, the human person is in the process of ‘becoming’. He/she would be that person of the past but to conclude that he/she is the same as that ’someone’ he/she had been would be inaccurate. Its a paradox…which makes life a bit more beautiful.

Nice. A good read. I’m sure some people might interprete it differently but I suppose that the ship with the old parts isn’t really the Ship of Case. Everything and everyone changes, and at some point of time we leave parts of us behind so that we can adjust to our current environment. Come to think of it this is very open to interpretation. For me, I’ve always believed that although we are deeply affected by our past experiences, we should take a person for what he IS and not what he WAS. People change constantly, as do their surroundings. Looking at the ship the boy made from the old parts we can tell what the ship WAS like but it’s not really the Ship of Case. Though we do get a rough idea of what it might be like now. I am what I am today, as for tomorrow we’ll have to wait and see. A very thoughtful read indeed. Good job.

IMHO,
the new ship was built out of curiousity. It does not reflect the original purpose.
the new body was built from the shadows of the old one, (which all must pass in due time)—> where the memory of alco-king gets reminisced.
it’s a matter of purpose. it’s all about purpose that pushes us to do things.
for whatever we do, however we do it, there is always an underlying purpose.

Lessee…
have two shoeboxes. label one ’ship on the pier’ and the other ’ship the boy built’…
get 4 small wooden blocks. label each as ‘original ship of case part’ then place in ’ship on the pier’ box.
each morning, get one ‘original ship of case part’ block from ’ship on the pier’ box and put it into the ’ship the boy built’ box. then replace the block you took from ’ship on the pier’ box with another small block, this time label it as ‘replacement part for ship of case’. do this again for three days.
guess what is in the ’ship the boy built’ box…

Hell, I would love to live in a country like that. free alcohol for loyal subjects.
Without a doubt, the Ship of Case is THE ship used by the late king’s subjects to celebrate in drunken stupor in honour of him years after years.

An object is not only defined by its material or its looks. There also is the purpose, and in a way, a spirit. The second ship has the same appearance but was built with completely different intentions. There is only one original. The first one.
Winand said this on August 27, 2006 at 9:47 am
This is interesting. To pick one or the other is indeed like making an ultimatum. The “old” ship represents the fundamental/up bringing/the origin of a person and the “new” ship is the person today. And the person today is moulded by the earlier years. This new person could have well evolved into a better person, or vice versa. Instead of picking the old ship or the new ship, here’s another thought to ponder: There is no right or wrong answer though it is what the individual makes out of it. All things are relative.

we are not really talking here about the ship its one person evolving into a better one, what we were and what we have become is one whole person. to ignore the past is to invalidate the present. we are whole if we embrace our past and present. the paradox of life…we take the good and the bad, the old and the new…the nice and the naughty….nyahahaha…enjoy your life!!!
eliza ella said this on August 28, 2006 at 5:20 am
Well, if you ask me, none of the ships is the ship of case.Because, figuring all those people were drunkards, the main value of the ship of case has been forgotten. If the ship of case was really important, it should have been preserved and kept sacred by the drunkards-though I don’t know if they even know what sacred is, better yet keep it sacred- because it was built in memory of the King. Seeing as they neglected the essence and the sacredness of the ship, then the purpose of the ship is then nothing more than
illusions.
The old ship-uh-parts- are merely a sight for sore eyes for the people who are allergic to mess.
Yeah.
And the boy who rebuilt the old parts of the ship has his own purpose in building it, therefore, that ship could not be the ship of case because it lacks the purpose of considering it sacred for Case.
It’s really quite simple, A ship or any other object can have the name, but then without the purpose, it couldn’t be that thing anymore. It’s merely a vessel for the name and not the real thing because the essence or purpose doesn’t exist.

NOne of the Two..the real ship is in the mind. The two ship was just a representation of the ship of case. Just like in philosophy when ask what is a “chair” you simply point out to a chair, a bench or anything to sit in….but the “real” chair exist only in the mind. In philosophy ” to be perceived is to exist” just like the ship of case its existence lies on the perception of the people. In real life everything around us is just a representation of what we think existing if we stop thinkin bout it would cease to exist. Get?! thats all…..

That’s easy, The Ship of Case is the old one that used by the good people would take the ship out every year and drink themselves blind in memory of their beloved alco-king . The material is irrelevant.
Daniel said this on August 31, 2006 at 11:45 pm
the original ship built by the kids is the real ship of case. Well, The first one is always the original. If your beloved cat died, and you cloned it, would you still love the clone just like the way you once loved your beloved cat?

The ship by the pier is the Ship of Case. A person will not change his/her identity just because of replacing certain parts of the body or donating organs to another and vice-versa.
